Who is the Wessex Wanderer?

Driven by intellectual curiosity and an eclectic mind, The Wessex Wanderer seeks quiet moments in unplanned mini-adventures. Whether it's the everyday, the unusual, or the unexpected, each wander offers a chance to observe, learn, and reflect.

There is no rush here, and definitely no hiking boots or time limits involved - just slow meanderings through country lanes and villages, hamlets and market towns, around the hidden corners of Somerset and westward. It is all about noticing the commonplace, people, places, and things and finding joy and knowledge on the road less travelled.

Rooted & Rural is a personal, not-for-profit project based in Somerset and the home of The Wessex Wanderer.

It's a place for me to share what I see, what I discover and what I think about along the way. From the landscapes, history and wildlife to the people, places, traditions and the commonplace things. There's a lot to explore and learn about.

Through my wanderings, essays, creative writing, seasonal notes and other ponderings, I look at the familiar from different angles, things that might otherwise go unnoticed, and explore the stories behind the places and people I encounter.

But Rooted & Rural is about more than simply sharing interesting things. It's about sharing ideas, sparking curiosity and conversations, perhaps encouraging us all to look a little closer, think a little differently and take a greater interest in the places we live in and the world we share.

It's also about - hopefully - encouraging a greater awareness of what is around us, noticing what makes a place special, appreciating what we have, and recognising that the things we value today may not always be there tomorrow.

There's plenty to discover, and I hope you'll find something here that interests you, makes you think or simply just brings you pleasure.
